I have an old Vista Gateway laptop 9 years old that hasn't been able to connect to the internet since October I didn't give it much thought since I knew Microsoft was killing support in a few months.
So last week before I moved iTunes to my new Dell Inspiron laptop I tried going online one last time to update everything but still nothing; even now as I write this, nothing. So, does anyone know what happened back in October some update perhaps that may have caused this problem? You are also at a greater risk from malware. Joined Jul 8, Messages 5, I have a Motorola Surfboard cable modem 2 months old , Belkin wireless router, and another computer hooked up on my network using wired connections.
My other computer is working fine with no problems as is the wireless on my cell phone. Exactly 1 week ago I woke up in the morning and found my HP didn't have internet.
The only message on the screen was notification that windows updates were installed. I didn't think much of the internet issue and didn't have time to look into it until yesterday. I thought that maybe it was the "built in" NVidia network card that went bad so I fired in a Realtek and still same problem.
IE7 comes up "Web page cannot be displayed". The connection icon in the tray shows "Unidentified Network" with local access only. Ok so then I called my ISP Charter and they had me run through resetting modem, router, computer, ip release etc It seems the IP address would not change. I'm at work and do not have the specific IP address to post but it started with Anyway, after 45 minutes on the phone with them they suggested I call microsoft. An hour and 45 minutes later after working with a tech from microsoft and basically doing the same things as I did with my ISP, still no internet.
They suggested I call my ISP back to have them reset my modem again I called them back and we went through the same deal again. No luck. They suggested I call HP. So I did and they stated since my computer is out of warranty they can not offer any assitance at no charge. After spending 4 hours on the phone yesterday I was pretty ticked considering the outcome.
Looking to see if anyone else has experienced this issue and what they did to resolve. I was running F-Secure as an AV program but uninstalled it just in case it was causing a problem.
I did 2 system restores but that did not resolve. Computer was running fine with no issues prior to the internet going out. Maybe running a bit slow but I've attributed that to Vista.
